KCAA Meet-Up At the Nelson-Atkins

Could we persuade you to come on a miniature[s] adventure with KCAA at the Nelson-Atkins? Join us beginning at 4:30 for an evening of archives, exhibits, film, and sips and snacks on Friday, July 11, at the Nelson-Atkins.

We'll start in the Spencer Art Reference Library (2nd floor, Bloch Building) to see the archives exhibit "The Starr Collection: A Legacy in Miniature," which tells the story of how this singular collection of portrait miniatures, the gift of John and Martha Starr, came to be at the Nelson-Atkins, and features 19th century manuscripts associated with the family of English portrait miniaturist John Smart (1741-1811). Also in the library, "Setting the Scene," presents books from the library’s Special Collections that provide a brief tour of fashion, style, and architecture from the Georgian period, when Smart was active, and reflects the world he and his sitters inhabited.

These library and archives displays are companions to the exhibit "John Smart: Virtuoso in Miniature," (Gallery 128), which will be our next stop. This free exhibit showcases the museum's collection of John Smart’s art and includes a signed and dated example from nearly every year the artist worked, making it the largest, most comprehensive collection of his portraits in existence. The miniatures are part of the Starr Collection of Portrait Miniatures.

After sips, snacks, and socializing in Bloch Lobby (some light fare provided, drinks and additional food available to order), stay to watch the 1995 film adaptation of Jane Austen's novel Persuasion (tickets $13 or $10 for members, buy your own ticket, suggest booking ahead).

KCAA Meeting Hosts Needed

KCAA is looking for member institutions willing to host upcoming meetings. Is your institution is willing and able to host a future Spring Meeting, Fall Symposium, or networking event? The requirements for hosting include, at minimum, the ability to seat between 30 to 40 attendees and the ability to have food and drink in the meeting area. Access to A/V equipment or hook-ups will also likely be required.

Thank you for your consideration.
