The Harry S. Truman Library was established on July 6, 1957, under the provisions of the Presidential Libraries Act of 1955. As an agency of the National Archives and Records Administration, it is responsible for preserving, describing, and providing reference service on the papers of Harry S. Truman and other manuscripts in its custody; acquiring related historical materials; preparing documentary and descriptive publications; and conducting an informative museum exhibit program. In addition to the Truman papers, which include the White House Files for the Truman administration, the Library has more than 400 other manuscript collections in its custody representing the papers of individuals who were officials in the Truman administration or who were acquainted with Truman at some point during his life. The Library also has records of Presidential commissions and committees appointed by Truman. The Library's archival holdings as of January, 2007 numbered approximately 16,000,000 pages of manuscripts; over 110,000 still pictures; 330,000 linear feet of motion pictures; and just over 500 oral history interviews. As of June 2023, our archival holdings include 182,000 photographs, 800 motion pictures, and about 3,000 books. The Johnson County Museum began as an all-volunteer organization in 1967 with the mission of collecting, preserving and sharing the history of Johnson County with the community. Originally located in the two-room 1927 Greenwood School in Shawnee, the facility expanded over the years into a 20,000 sq. ft. museum before moving to its new home in 2017. The museum celebrated its 50th year in its new home at the Johnson County Arts & Heritage Center in 2017, and for the first time, began charging an admission fee. The museum has been recognized over 20 times for excellence in exhibitions, programming and publications by national, regional and state Lanesfield Fallorganizations. The Johnson County Museum also operates the Lanesfield Historic Site in Edgerton, KS. The museum came under the management of Johnson County Park and Recreation District in 2016. The Museum Advisory Council, appointed by the Johnson County Commission, oversees the museum’s collection program. A separate not-for-profit, the Johnson County Museum Foundation, raises private funds to support museum initiatives. A professional staff of 10 oversees day-to-day museum operations with the support of over 50 community volunteers. In 2022, the Johnson County Museum received national accreditation through the American Alliance of Museums. This recognition demonstrates our commitment to excellence, accountability, high professional standards and continued institutional improvement.

The Johnson County Museum holds over 3,000 cubic feet of archival material that document Johnson County. Materials range from published and non-published family histories, secondary resources on local history, Kansas state history, and books relevant thematic topics like western migration, the railroad, and suburban development. These findings aids are designed to assist researchers in understanding what the records include. They are available for researchers to use at the Museum by making an appointment.
